“The human body is not built to be shot out of a cannon at 120 km/h, and no one thought she could make a living from it. She proved them wrong.”
In 1877, seventeen-year-old circus acrobat Rossa Matilda meets the “Great Farrini”, a clever producer and businessman who invented an innovative machine for launching objects and people into the air. She becomes a human cannonball and, under the stage name Zazel, quickly transforms into a major star. As a human projectile, she performs dangerous circus acts all over the world.
Zazel is both heroine and victim, an innocent girl and a symbol of death, protagonist and observer. In a gradually intensifying process, we witness the accumulation of attention leading towards the climax — the cannon shot.
Choreographer Miriam Engel, in collaboration with composer Yigal Myrtenbaum, has created a music and dance work that reveals the true story of Zazel — from her fateful encounter with Farrini, through the first cannon shot, to the bittersweet ending.
