VYROZUMĚNÍ

Words without meaning, power without restraint. Havel's comedy about bureaucracy that speaks in order to say nothing.

 

The play was created in a happy period of the author's life, when he was already an established collaborator of the Na Zábradlí Theatre. In 1965, he presented the absurd play Vyrozomění there, the theme of which is corporate communication. Careers are built and destroyed through the artificial bureaucratic language ptydepe, and language becomes a source of misunderstanding and an instrument of power. Havel depicts bureaucratic struggles for positions and privileges with exaggeration and humor. It is remarkable that the game remains relevant today. Manipulation, careerism, obfuscation of communication, intrigue and abuse of power are still present in contemporary organizations. The opportunity to laugh at these evils, which are actually quite monstrous, can ultimately be very liberating.
