Tanec s medvědem

The intimate drama Dance with a Bear is an emotional probe into a partnership exposed to a fundamental life test. It sensitively captures the moment when the joy of an expected child collides with fear, uncertainty and pressure from the environment and when every decision is associated with loss. Without embellishment, pathos and simple answers, it brings the differences in the views of parents, friends and experts and opens up a topic that is often not talked about in society. The film by director Jitka Rudolfová is a story about the fragility of human happiness, responsibility and the courage to bear the consequences of one's own decisions, enhanced by exceptionally strong acting performances by Pavla Gajdošíková, Kryštof Hádek, Klára Melíšková, Vladimír Javorský, Zuzana Kronerová and Petra Špalková.

Linda is 20 weeks pregnant when she and her husband Mark learn during a follow-up ultrasound that their daughter has a congenital developmental defect. They have a month left to have an abortion, but this option is against their will. So they start visiting parents of children with the same disability and meet Alice, the mother of twelve-year-old Adam. Linda's fears grow. How can she combine motherhood with a career as a very successful violinist? She finds no support even from her mother, who encourages her to have an abortion. To top it all off, Mark, who works as a transport pilot, suddenly finds himself on unpaid leave. The couple faces an ever-increasing crisis, which is gradually exacerbated by the lack of understanding from those around them for their decision to bring a disabled child into the world. In a heated argument between them, abortion is mentioned for the first time as a real option... The viewer follows the heroes at the moment when their lives are falling apart, and they share their greatest doubts, fears and hopes. "It's a film about making decisions, about the fact that nothing is black and white," says the lead actress Pavla Gajdošíková, who plays pregnant violinist Linda. Her partner is Kryštof Hádek, who brings his own experience as a parent and personal sensitivity to the role of Marek. "I'm a father myself, so I've also gone through that process of wondering if everything will be okay. And I have disabled children in my family. Having a healthy child is a huge gift, it's not something that is taken for granted," says the actor, who admits that filming it raised fundamental questions. "It's not easy at all to face a decision like the one our characters are experiencing," he adds. Dance with a Bear is a fragile story that offers authenticity, exceptional acting performances by six Czech Lions winners, and a sensitive but open treatment of a socially important topic. Under the weight of a painful discovery, all family relationships change, and the film shows not only the dilemma of one couple, but above all how fragile human happiness can be, how challenging it is to bear responsibility for a new life, and where to look for light in dark moments.
