The story of a successful lawyer and his son, whose mother and grandmother Matylda became ill with Alzheimer's disease. The new situation will turn their lives upside down, but everyone must find a way to each other and sometimes find themselves. Karel Roden and Regina Rázlová met for the first time in front of the camera in a film full of emotion and laughter.
In a story inspired by a real event, the withdrawn Karel (Karel Roden) lives in a "perfect" world bound by strict rules. He visits his extroverted and bohemian mother Matylda (Regina Rázlová), a former bar singer, only out of obligation. Matilda unexpectedly sells the apartment and moves in with Karl, their coexistence is a disaster for him. Especially when it comes out that Matilda is developing Alzheimer's disease. As a possible solution, it is suggested that Karl's son Pavel (Antonio Šoposki), an irresponsible flutist who despises his father's profession as an executor, will take care of the peculiar grandmother. The common household of three different temperaments of different generations brings a series of humorous situations, with the progressing symptoms of the disease rather tragicomic. At first glance, the hopeless situation turns the family's life upside down, but in the end it shows them the true meaning of life.
"The idea for the film Tancuj, Matyldo arose more than seven years ago, during the lifetime of my mother, who was suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Caring for her also brought a number of humorous or tragicomic situations. My mother didn't want to go to the institution, I had to promise my father that I wouldn't send her there. I had no idea what the promise would entail. Among other things, I owe its fulfillment to the conditions that made this care in the home environment possible, and to my two sons. Despite a number of difficult situations, it united our family," says the film's producer and screenwriter Nataša Slavíková.
Part of the creators' inspiration was the famous song Waltzing Matilda, sung by Tom Waits, among others, a song about the fact that despite all the losses and falls in life, one must carry one's burden and "dance" on until the very end.
In the roles of completely different characters, former bar singer and bohemian Matilda and her son, an emotionally closed lawyer, the creators cast actors who give captivating performances in the film. "In addition to the fact that they are both excellent actors and typically fit their characters exactly, the story gives them the opportunity to show their acting skills in positions that are new to them," says director Petr Slavík.
