Laurie Anderson's bandmates and leading figures of the New York downtown jazz scene are returning to Jazzinec. Tomáš Katschner says: "I don't like to repeat the same performers, but this is a big exception. SexMob are a great experience for me, and when I couldn't get them to come to us last year with Laurie Anderson, I didn't hesitate for a moment and happily accepted their offer this year. Their concerts are unique, so this year will be a brand new experience."
The SexMob quartet was founded in 1996 by trumpeter Steven Bernstein with saxophonist Briggan Krauss (John Zorn, Bill Frisell, Norah Jones, Butch Morris, Marc Ribot, Medeski, Martin and Wood, U2…), bassist Tony Scherr (John Scofield, Bill Frisell, Woody Herman, Chris Brown…) and drummer Kenny Wollesen (Tom Waits, Bill Frisell, Norah Jones, John Lurie, Sean Lennon, New Klezmer Trio…). The band's sets are usually full of covers of well-known pop songs, which are given a humorous and avant-garde treatment by the band. Bernstein points to a return to the basic jazz tradition - the band takes a well-known song, disassembles it and reassembles it. The unique interpretative abilities are also confirmed by the fact that SexMob were the supporting band for Laurie Anderson on tour in 2023–2024. The band also participated in her album Amelia (2024).
SexMob deliberately avoids jazz standards and reaches for the repertoire of Prince, Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, and film melodies from Fellini to James Bond. As an arranger and studio player, Steven Bernstein has worked with Leonard Cohen, Lou Reed, Marianne Faithfull, Bill Frisell, and Laurie Anderson, among others.
