A Northern Fairy Tale is a charming animated adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairy tale The Snow Queen, set in the beautiful Victorian Copenhagen of the late 19th century. The film draws inspiration not only from Andersen's original work, but also from the enchanting poetics of Selma Lagerlöf, the Swedish Nobel Prize laureate, and the Finnish writer Zacharias Topelius.
Little Gerda embarks on an adventurous journey into the unknown to find her best friend Kai, who has disappeared without a trace. During her journey, she meets not only friendly people and animals, but also a cunning witch. Little does she know that she is secretly being followed by a powerful and cold enemy: the Snow Queen and her terrifying apprentice Louie. Kai is imprisoned in an ice palace deep in the north, in Finnmark, Norway.
Will Gerda be able to face the pitfalls of the harsh winter and evil spells and save Kai? And will their return home truly be the most magical Christmas miracle?
