Madagascar in the 1970s seemed like a paradise at first glance, especially from the perspective of a ten-year-old boy who escaped his daily life into the world of comics. But in one of the last colonies of the crumbling French colonial empire, the illusion of peace is fading. Behind the safe walls of the French military base, social discontent is growing. Even the Red Island faces changes that will never be the same again. The film Red Island had its world premiere in competition at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. The film is directed by Robin Campillo, who wrote the screenplay for the Palme d'Or-winning film Class. Campillo achieved his greatest directorial success with the drama 120 BMP. The film competed at the world's most prestigious film festival in Cannes, where it won a total of four awards: the Grand Jury Prize, the FIPRESCI International Film Critics' Prize, as well as the Queer Palme and the François Chalais Award. 120 BMP was France's Oscar nominee in the foreign language film category.
