Interpreter Petra (Pavla Beretová) has to come to terms with the fact that she has become a widow at the age of forty due to a tragic event. She soon discovers that heartbreak isn't the only challenge she has to face. Added concern for a teenage daughter (Julie Šoulcová) and pressure from a manipulative mother-in-law (Zuzana Kronerová). And then there is the whole bureaucratic machinery that comes to life with a person's death: mortgages, loans, rents, fees, endless probate. However, among the ruins of her life, Petra finds the courage to start anew step by step... The feature film, based on real events, is a fragile and moving study of the grieving process in our contemporary world. The film Year of the Widow is the feature-length feature debut of documentarian Veronika Lišková (Daniel's World, Visitors), who says about its subject: "We wanted Year of the Widow to bring to the cinema screens a strong realistic story from the present, which will sensitively talk about things that our companies prefer not to think. A story not only about the loss of a life partner and grieving, but mainly about a new beginning and the power to live your life alone or for yourself. And also about the fact that it is necessary to find one's own inner freedom and independence in order to be able to give it to our loved ones as well."
