The village drama by the Mrštík brothers comes to life accompanied by music from the band Čechomor. On stage, the songs are performed by the actors of the Czech Scene.
This novelistic chronicle, capturing the fates of a fictional village, ranks among the essential novels of Czech realism. Miroslav Krobot’s dramatisation, one of the most frequently staged adaptations of this work, focuses on interpersonal relationships, human desires, and imperfections. It sensitively reduces the extensive text for the stage without losing its key motifs.
It contrasts the world of folk traditions, Christian celebrations, and clearly defined rules with the inner struggles of individuals, the desire for happiness, fulfilled love, and the painful inevitability of personal tragedies. Yet it does not give up on hope — and so, after a cruel winter, spring returns once again.
