Fifteen-year-old John (Robert Aramayo)'s life is forever changed when a sudden onset of Tourette's syndrome brings uncontrollable vocal and physical tics. This leads to conflict and isolation. Shame prevents him from forming relationships, while the world around him is largely unaware of and misunderstanding his condition.
The British film I Swear It's Not My Fault is based on the true story of John Davidson. It tells an intimate and powerful story of his initially carefree adolescence ending in a harsh alienation, when he is rejected by an uncomprehending world and gropingly searches for his own life. John's meeting with Dottie (Maxine Peake), the energetic mother of a former classmate, opens a new path for him into a world in which he finds support, understanding and the courage to face his own life and destiny. Thanks to this relationship, his shame and isolation turn into strength, he also finds joy and the ability to often humorously use his disability for enlightenment and understanding. Perhaps even the British Queen will notice.
Director Kirk Jones, who also wrote and produced the film, focuses on the real-life experiences and moral dilemmas that accompany people with Tourette syndrome and their loved ones. The film emphasizes the need for understanding and patience, showing how a small gesture of acceptance can completely change someone's life. How important it is to not be afraid of being different.
I Swear It's Not My Fault had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, received five nominations for the British Academy Film Awards, and won two of them, including one for Best Actor in a Leading Role for Robert Aramayo.
