“Look, I can’t talk to you right now, I’ve got The Three Musketeers… Yes, it’s still being performed.”
Ypsilonka returns to its invention of total improvisation and lets the audience peek into the men’s dressing room.
Studio Ypsilon was founded in 1963 in Liberec as an independent experimental theatre group by Jan Schmid — its founder, director, and key figure of the company.
The theatre’s typical features are synthesis, expression, communicativeness, authenticity, and humour that always brings perspective. Its creative method is collective improvisation, working with controlled chance, and the openness of the work.
Since 1978, Studio Ypsilon has been based in Prague at the Olympic Palace on Spálená Street, where it continues to develop Schmid’s original vision of theatre as a “freely cultivated garden” — a space for diversity, mutuality, and creative freedom. Many prominent personalities have passed through the theatre; today, the theatre explores the very meaning of theatre itself and searches for its truly contemporary modern face.
