Tian is twelve and, like most of his classmates, he prefers to look at his mobile phone rather than at the blackboard or in his textbooks. He has been getting by with it for quite some time, but when it turns out that he has the worst grades in the class, his parents run out of patience. They send him to his grandmother for the holidays. They hope that being away from the city and the beauty of the wild nature will make him look up from the screen and be interested in the world around him. But much more happens. Tian makes friends with a panda in the forest, whom he names Moon. And it is their meeting that starts an incredible adventure that will change not only Tian's life, but also his entire family's. A new story by Gilles de Maistre, the creator of the films Mia and the White Lion or Ella and the Black Jaguar, is coming to cinemas.
Director Gilles de Maistre returns with a remarkable story about the true bond between man and wild animal. After films with a white lion from the South African jungle, a wolf from the Canadian wilderness or a black jaguar from the Amazon rainforest, he now travels to a nature reserve in Sichuan province to find a giant panda. This is the home of the shaggy black and white bear and is therefore included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Panda and Me follows an ordinary family on an extraordinary journey of discovery, during which a young boy befriends an adorable baby panda he calls Moon. As the days go by, the two become inseparable under the amused supervision of their grandmother. But every vacation ends, and the two friends have no choice but to say goodbye. But when Tian discovers that Moon is in danger and must be relocated, he embarks on a dangerous journey to see his furry friend one last time.
Set amidst a picturesque mountain landscape, this deeply moving story explores the universal themes of nature, family and true friendship. It is also one of the few films to feature live pandas in their natural habitat, a hallmark of Gilles de Maistre's work. He filmed the scenes with them from a distance using special cameras to avoid unnecessary stress on the animals, and the actor who plays little Tian was the only actor who could get close to them. This resulted in a number of unique shots that will be watched with amazement by both young and old audiences.
