Only one instrument in the world has a piercing, hissing sound that resembles a desperate human scream and groan. The Death Whistle! It was once used in rituals by Aztec priests, who were infamous for extreme brutality and bloodshed, carving the hearts out of human victims while they were still alive or flaying them. Now, silenced for centuries, the instrument of evil resounds in the hands of a group of unsuspecting high school students, and its terrifying whistle summons their agonizing death. While the origin of the murderous artifact remains unclear, a horrific series of events gathers momentum...
As if it wasn't enough that Chrys, played by Dafne Keen, star of Logan: Wolverine, has to deal with the death of her father, she is also forced by circumstances to move in with her cousin Rel (Sky Yang). That's a lot for one teenager, so it's no wonder that her surroundings consider her problematic. Although she tries to fit in at her new school, she still has to clash with the inseparable duo of insidious nerds (Jhaleil Swaby and Mika Amonsen) and the appropriately conceited class queen Grace (Ali Skovbye). At least she finds a kindred spirit in classmate Ellie (Sophie Nélisse).
Things get even worse when Chrys receives a school locker from a basketball star who died under mysterious circumstances. Inside, she finds a whistle that, when blown, causes six teenagers to face the unimaginable: they will face their own death and see how they die. And it will definitely not be a pleasant sight! The ritual objects of the ancient Aztecs were a harbinger of an exceptionally bloody end...
The creepy skull-shaped object with a thick, ugly mouthpiece protruding from the back of its head is inspired by a real Aztec artifact and brings death to anyone who hears its call. “I was drawn to the mysterious mythology around the death whistle and the opportunity to create a diverse range of cinematic, imaginative and terrifying ways to die,” says director Corin Hardy, explaining why he chose this murderous instrument. “I knew it would be a kind of main character. It’s on screen for the entire duration of the film and it had to stand up. We went through about 50 or 60 designs and found some pretty strange, scary-looking things,” he adds, adding that he also enlisted the help of Spanish designer Daniel Carrasco. He worked on the horror film Substance, which won several awards for its visual concept, including an Oscar for Best Mask.
The screenplay was written by Owen Egerton, known for his sense of dark symbolism and original horror ideas. The atmosphere of the film is significantly shaped by Björn Charpentier's cinematography, which uses contrasts of light and shadow, cramped composition and other effects to make the individual death scenes feel extremely physical and uncomfortably real.
