A film about human failure that fundamentally confronts us with questions of free will, control, justice and compassion. The reality we take for granted is actually very fragile.
Inspired by true events, this story tells the story of a loving father whose life is shattered by a single tragic mistake. It shakes up his happy marriage and leaves him completely alone. Despite the threat of prison and an unbearable sense of guilt, he tries to regain his wife's trust and save the love that, despite the pain, still unites them. When he discovers that the true origin of the tragedy lies deep in the architecture of the human mind, a fragile path to reconciliation begins to take shape. But can their love withstand such a great failure?
The film Father is exceptional in its treatment. Similar to the recent Netflix hit Adolescent, it is shot in just a few very long takes. Director Tereza Nvotová explains: “For me, the language of the film is as important as the story itself. I wanted to create something like a video game, but in completely different conditions that lead us deeper into our own inner selves. I wanted the viewer to fully connect with the main character and ask the same questions as him.”
Director Tereza Nvotová has established herself as a filmmaker who is not afraid to address controversial topics. Her films ?Dirt? and ?Svetlonoc have won numerous awards, including the Golden Leopard at the Locarno IFF and the Czech Film Critics' Award. The film Otec was included in the prestigious Orizzonti competition section at this year's Venice International Film Festival.
