A World War II psychiatrist evaluates Nazi leaders before the Nuremberg Trials and gradually becomes increasingly obsessed with understanding evil while developing a disturbing relationship with Hermann Göring (Russell Crowe).
In the fall of 1945, war-torn Nuremberg hosts a tribunal of Nazi war criminals led by Hermann Göring (Russell Crowe), who is interrogated in his prison cell by American military psychiatrist Douglas Kelley (Rami Malek). During the trial, those present are horrified not only by the revelations of the hitherto secret extent of Nazi atrocities, but also by the subtle human dimension of the judged beasts, which forces Kelley to confront the very nature of evil and its role in history, and not only in the past.
