Julien (François Civil) is a high school teacher. He is young, idealistic, enthusiastic and determined to be the best teacher and role model for his students. He also tries to create a relationship with his class by taking some of the more problematic and promising students under his wing, including the timid Leslie. However, some of her classmates do not like this preferential treatment, and the teachers begin to suggest other intentions. Due to pressure from her classmates, Leslie begins to misinterpret the teacher's approach and accuses him of sexual harassment. Gossip is spreading through the school. The teacher and his students find themselves in a spiral in which they lose control over the situation. And when the whole school is on the verge of a fire, only one motto applies: don't make waves... Director and screenwriter Teddy Lussi-Modeste made the film Don't Make Waves based on his own experience as a teacher: “At the high school where I taught, the head guidance counselor handed me a letter written by one of my students. The girl accused me of looking at her while touching my belt. She was thirteen years old. Things got out of hand. One of her older brothers threatened to kill me. Another one of her older brothers made her file a complaint against me. I refused to take time off because I foolishly thought it was an admission of guilt. Every day I left school wondering if someone was going to break my legs.”
