Dan (Martin Pechlát) is a successful architect. He has just finished designing a skyscraper that will soon become a landmark in the city. When he is about to tell his wife Kateřina (Anna Polívková) the good news, he is surprised by unexpected news: the doctor has just found out that her kidneys are failing and the only long-term solution is a transplant. So, to give or not to give? That is the question that Daniel must decide. Will he offer his wife a kidney, which could cost him his life, or not, which could cost him his marriage? And how will their friends Erik (Mira Nosek) and Diana (Barbora Seidlová), who were hoping to enjoy a carefree weekend and celebrate Kateřina's birthday together, get involved? Kateřina and Dan's relationship is put to a fundamental test when Kateřina finds out that she will need a kidney donor. The first person she logically turns to is her husband, who also has the same blood type as her. But he doesn't react the way she would have expected... However, good-natured Erik immediately rushes over with his heart, or rather his kidney, in his hand. But there was one catch. He forgot to tell his wife Diana about his generous offer, which is surprising to say the least. This is no longer about one vital organ, the future of both couples is uncertain, as a few surprising findings also come to light. The sharp comedy brings a humorous look at partner troubles and a light-hearted reflection on moral dilemmas. The film was based on the successful production Side Effects, which was first presented on domestic stages by the Ostrava Mír Theatre and reprised for several seasons under the title Ledvina. It was directed by Matěj Pichler and produced by Pavel Vácha (Czech Film Critics Award and Czech Lion nomination for She Came at Night). “What I appreciated most about the original play was the combination of clever humor with a serious theme. I believe that we will be able to translate it to the screen. The script was written for quite a long time, because it is important to separate the theatrical and cinematic forms of entertainment,” adds director Matěj Pichler.
