Diptych 1918/2022. About soldiers and refugees. Remarque, Vorozhbyt

 

"Every good ruler needs at least one war to gain his glory."

 

The production diptych consists of an adaptation of the cult novel by Erich Maria Remarque and a contemporary play by Ukrainian author Natalia Vorožbyt. In the first part, we observe the horrors of World War I through the eyes of front-line soldiers. The second part brings a look at the fate of Ukrainian refugee women in contemporary Europe. We are currently asking ourselves whether, as a result of the development of the twentieth century, a century of wars and totalitarian regimes, we have wasted the opportunity for a peaceful order in Europe? Is contemporary Europe, with its historical traumas, capable of resisting imperial Russian expansionism, or is it completely politically impotent through its own fault? And how different are the male and female experiences of war events?

The performance generates a large amount of polystyrene waste. At the time of the production, we partnered with Ecometal, a company specializing in certified polystyrene recycling. They will collect and recycle the vast majority of the polystyrene waste.
