The exhibition The Light of the World presents the painting work of Michelle Kuneš through a theme that has accompanied her work for a long time – light. But not only as an optical phenomenon that reveals things and gives them shape. For the author, light is primarily a living energy, a beginning and a force that permeates matter and keeps it alive.
The impressive oil paintings move between figuration and abstraction, between the visible world and its inner image. Figures, birds, natural scenery or Earth Pearls sometimes dissolve under layers of colours and light vibrations, as if their solid form were only temporary. In addition to the external light that makes reality present, an inner light appears – a glow emanating from the pictorial matter itself. In the works Birth, Revelation or in the almost immaterial white paintings, it becomes a metaphor for creative energy, transformation and life.
A prominent motif is jellyfish – deep-sea creatures capable of bioluminescence, which create their own light in absolute darkness. For the author, they become an image of human existence, regeneration and the ability to pass through darkness, transform and shine again.
The Light of the World is not an exhibition about light as a painting effect. It is an exhibition about light that reveals things, but also about the light we carry inside. About the moment when matter begins to dissolve in color and beneath the surface of the known world, something difficult to name appears for a moment. Something that perhaps does not need to be explained. Just glimpse it.
