Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke shines, entertains and moves in the Christmas romantic comedy Last Christmas, a story that combines the creative genius of actress and Oscar-winning screenwriter Emma Thompson with the timeless songs of George Michael.
If Bridget Jones was looking for an even more desperate person than herself, she would definitely hit the nail on the head in Kate (Emilia Clarke). The girl may seem like a cute little devil, but in reality she is a magnet for all kinds of bad decisions – she doesn't get along with her own family, doesn't know herself, can't find a normal guy and, on top of that, she works in a Christmas shop. You can tell by the fact that she wears an asexual elf costume, constantly jingles with a jingle bell and George Michael's Christmas hit Last Christmas is constantly playing in her head. Exactly a year ago, she was teetering between life and death when she underwent a very complicated operation. One would say that she would value that "second chance" more, but Kate obviously doesn't care. She ostentatiously ignores everything and everyone and navigates through life on the path of least resistance. But then she meets Tom (Henry Golding), a somewhat mysterious young man who increasingly begins to get in her way and into her life. And although Kate is determined to continue her current lifestyle, the influence of this boy, the Christmas atmosphere, and magical London will quickly melt her prematurely hardened heart.
Not since the Christmas classics The Holiday and The Holiday has there been a romantic film so strongly associated with the season of lights, presents and spilled slush. Until Emma Thompson dusted off an idea inspired by her friend, the late singer George Michael, and wrote a script based on his perennial Christmas hit Last Christmas. Can a feature film be created based on a single song? No doubt about it. With an Oscar for Best Screenplay (Sense and Sensibility) and the successful Bridget Jones's Baby in your filmography, you have nothing to fear. "It's not a superficial romantic comedy, but a smart film with serious undertones and rich in emotions. I originally didn't want to make a Christmas comedy, but this was something I couldn't turn down," says director Paul Feig.
