The film tells the story of a boy, Tonda, and his grandfather, originally a Russian nobleman, an amateur painter, a man of nobility, and above all, with a colorful and dramatic life destiny played by the excellent Miroslav Krobot. Together, this pair defies the difficult times of 1968.
Tonda is a small, bespectacled boy with bronchitis. And so when his parents and his older brother Jirka go on a trip to Paris in the summer of 1968, he is unlucky. He must stay in the fresh air at a cottage in the Jizerské hory under the supervision of his grandfather. He is a peculiar descendant of Russian nobles, a man of great nobility who always had to face great history in his life. However, their holiday coexistence, which Tonda definitely did not care about, changes the night of August 21. The grandfather knows very well what the Russian occupation means, he has a lot to do to calm his frightened grandson. He tries to strengthen him and, despite the turbulent times, put something good into him, enrich his soul. She teaches him French, how to dine well and, above all, not to give up.
The End of the World is a powerful story from a complex time, a narrative full of contrasts, whether it is the relationship between what Grandpa's rich life entails and Tondo's childhood world full of naivety, but also sincerity and love. We follow a poetic story seen through children's eyes, where there is no shortage of subtle humor and dramatic situations of unexpected military occupation.
