Stuntman Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) used to be a star in his field until something went wrong during a particularly challenging action scene. As a result of an uncontrolled fall from a great height, Colt ended up with a bruised body and ego. He decided to say goodbye to the film industry for good, and even kicked the beautiful and up-and-coming director Jody (Emily Blunt) for it. But after a year of hanging around, he gets tired of it, so he gratefully accepts an offer from an ambitious producer to play the role of understudy for action star Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) in an upcoming ambitious science fiction film. But when he found out that his former love Jody was making the film, he must have said to himself: "If I had known, I wouldn't have come here." And that's not the only misfortune. The whole shoot goes to waste, as the key actor Tom Ryder has disappeared into nowhere. And he entrusts Colt with finding him, because he can give and take blows and no one will miss him if he happens to disappear too. All of this turns Colt's priorities in life upside down. He realizes that he has missed the world of film terribly, that director Jody is the love of his life, and that if he doesn't find the star of her film alive and well, it might ruin her career. It's a very decent charge for an ordinary stuntman. Because as he says, "I'm not a hero, I'm just a stunt double."
