Remember the myth-ridden island where Vikings fought dragons for centuries before learning to live with them? The legendary animated story How to Train Your Dragon has been adapted into a live-action film and is once again making its way to the big screen.
If you were looking for the most resourceful Viking, you would end up with Hiccup (Mason Thames). However, on his native island of Blup, this is not a welcome trait, as the priority is for someone who can take down any dragon in any way, like Hiccup's father, the Viking chieftain Kliďas the Great (Gerard Butler). Dragons have always been the greatest enemy for the people here. However, when Hiccup accidentally wounds a specimen of the mythical and elusive member of the Night Fury species and begins to get to know it better, he understands that nothing has to last forever. Not even ancient enmities. But how is the young man, considered more of an outsider, to convince his fellow tribesmen, who still believe that the best dragon is the one they have safely locked away?
Director Dean Deblois (a three-time Oscar nominee) was at the heart of the animated “dragon” saga in 2010 and directed all three of its parts, so he was a natural choice for the live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon. “This return was a huge opportunity. First of all, I was able to make a live-action film, but above all, I was able to return to a world that I had missed incredibly,” says the director, adding: “Current technical capabilities have allowed me to create a very authentic world that every viewer who enters it will want to stay in.”
Returning to the same river was not just a filming experience for the director. Actor Gerard Butler also reprised his role as chieftain Kliďas the Great, only instead of a voice, he lent him his whole self. "It was a difference, only now I became a full-fledged Viking chieftain. It absorbed me and I believe it will absorb the audience as well," the actor promises.
