With the fairy tale How Princesses Wake Up (1977), director Václav Vorlíček followed up on the popular Three Nuts for Cinderella (1973). The film version of Sleeping Beauty underwent several significant changes compared to the literary version by Božena Němcová: instead of the fates, the princess is predicted an evil fate by her envious aunt, whose curse is mitigated by an old maid. The smug Prince Jiří is interested in Sleeping Beauty, but she falls in love with his younger brother Jaroslav. When the curse comes true and the princess pricks herself on a rose thorn, Jaroslav must overcome a series of adversities to wake up the girl he loves and the entire kingdom... Vorlíček cast the later theatre director Maria Horáková in the main role, the royal couple were played by Jiří Sovák and Milena Dvorská, and Prince Jaroslav was played by Jan Hrušínský. The musical accompaniment to the epic fairy tale was again composed by Karel Svoboda, and the central hit Jdi za štěstím was sung by Helena Vondráčková.
Even before the birth of the royal daughter, the king and queen travel to a desolate fortress - the queen's sister lives there, who has been separated from the world for many years. When the king was choosing a wife, he preferred Eliška, and the evil Melanie has been thinking only about revenge ever since - she is not interested in reconciliation even now. After the birth of her daughter Růženka, she pronounces a curse: Růženka is to prick her finger, fall asleep forever, and the entire kingdom with her. Růženka grows in beauty, and all pointed objects are removed from her reach, she is not allowed to take a step herself. To be on the safe side, her parents find her a groom as soon as she turns fifteen. He is Prince Jiří from a neighboring country, who comes to court her with his brother Jaroslav...
