World-renowned auctioneer and Czech-American Nicholas Lowry flies from New York to Prague to map out, in the role of a passionate collector, what shaped and defines Czech national identity. Traveling around the Czech Republic takes him to iconic places of graphic design, including Zlín, Litomyšl, Brno and Pilsen, where he examines not only the work of Tomáš Bata, Josef Váchal, Alfons Mucha, Ladislav Sutnar, but also the famous Pilsner beer. The journeys of the quirky guide in a tartan suit also lead to South Moravia for the aesthetics of wine labels, he goes on a tramping trip along the marked routes of the Czech Tourist Club, and meets the current generation of creators, such as Petr Babák, Martin Pecina or Aleš Najbrt. And through uncovering the Czech identity, Nicho gets closer to his own roots - his great-uncle founded the Primeros factory in Prague, which also spoke to the history of the Czech graphic identity. “I am Nicholas Lowry. I left New York and flew to Central Europe, to a small country that had a huge influence on the world of graphic design," says the American native with Czech roots. He embarks on an adventurous journey in the footsteps of graphic design in a country that he says is "close to his heart". He even lived in the Czech Republic for a while in the early 1990s and worked as a presenter on Radio 1. It was then that he started collecting historical Czech posters. And thanks to the combination of his profession, a number of personal collections and family history, he became the curator of a number of important international exhibitions in Europe and the USA. The film is part of the extensive project Identita, which pays tribute to Czech graphic design and brought viewers, among other things, the successful television series of the same name. However, in terms of content and format, these are two completely different audiovisual works.
