A story from the life of the Čapek family in Úpice
MUDr. Antonín Čapek and his wife Božena lived in Úpice for 17 years. Their three children also spent their childhood and adolescence here, and they grew up to be important personalities: Karel – a world-renowned writer, journalist and playwright, Josef – one of the most modern European painters, Helena – a writer, and although she was the oldest of three siblings and a very intelligent and courageous woman, she remains hidden in the shadow of her younger brothers to this day.
The play Helena in the Shadow of the Čapek Brothers is based on documented events and is actually an insight into the life of the Čapek family in a small town in the foothills of the Krkonoše Mountains. It is not a school-like description of historical events, but a kind, human and lively production telling the story of a real family.
The play was written directly for the Úpice theater association, which first performed it on April 26, 2024, on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the amateur theater in Úpice.
