A tragedy about desire
The production of Faust, directed by Jakub Čermák, offers an innovative perspective on Goethe's work. The director stages both works, placing the latter in a contemporary context. In contrast to the classic Prologue in Heaven, it focuses on Faust's final phase of life in the pre-hell of modern times. The emphasis is on the changing relationship between Faust and Mephistopheles, with both characters being doubled – Faust as young and old, Mephistopheles in two female versions. This allows for a deeper look at the development of the characters and their inner worlds. The direction is based on minimalist text and expressive movement, which creates a strong visual and emotional experience that encourages viewers to deeper interpretation.
