Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt), nicknamed the "wannabe world champion" of 1990s FORMULA 1, was a promising racer whose career was ruined by a near-fatal accident. Thirty years later, when Sonny is working as a for-hire racer, he is approached by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), who is now the owner of a moribund FORMULA 1 team. Ruben convinces Sonny to return to FORMULA 1, help his team win, and in doing so, save it. Sonny's new protégé is the impetuous rookie Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), who wants to go his own way. But as the engines roar, Sonny's past catches up with him and he discovers that his teammate is his fiercest competitor and that he cannot make the journey to redemption alone.
