Thirteen-year-old Finn (Mason Thames) was the only one who managed to escape from the serial kidnapper and murderer nicknamed Ethan Hawk. He even managed to kill him on the run. He was greatly helped by the disconnected black phone he used to communicate with Hawk's victims. When you survive such a horror, it's hard to return to normal life. Paradoxically, Finn's sensitive younger sister Gwen (Madeleine McGraw) has a much harder time enduring the horrors she's experienced. She is haunted by dreams of a ringing black phone and three boys who disappeared without a trace years ago during a winter vacation at a camp in the Alpine Lake reservation. In an attempt to separate dreams and reality, Gwen and Finn set out to search for a tragic past at the aforementioned camp, where a massive snowstorm cuts them off from civilization. But that will be the least of their problems. Even in this camp, Gwen is haunted by nightmares much uglier than the ones she dreamed at home. They include the man, the Grabber, whom Finn had taken from the world years ago. But when this monster tells you that "dead" is just a word, you have to take him seriously. While director Scott Derrickson considers the first film to be more of a thriller with supernatural elements, the sequel is a pure horror film, he says. "It's grittier, more violent, and more bloody. It goes far beyond the limits of the first film in terms of cruelty and extreme situations," the director promises.
