László Tóth (Adrien Brody) used to be a renowned architect in Europe before he was reduced to a mere number and a death row inmate in a concentration camp because of his Jewish origin. He managed to survive the war, but immediately after it he left a wounded Europe to forget. Like many others, he tried to restart in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty, only to discover that his reputation as an exceptional architect remained at home in Budapest and that the proverbial American Dream is not guaranteed for everyone. It is a small consolation to discover that his wife (Felicity Jones) also managed to survive the horrors of a concentration camp and that only a lack of money for the trip prevents her from seeing them again. The cards really start to turn when László meets the benefactor Van Buren (Guy Pearce), who sees his potential and begins to generously support him. At that moment, László flies into a frenzy. He will weave all his skills and talents, as well as past traumas and inner demons, into a structure that will ensure his immortality. But only on the condition that he manages to complete it and that he does not destroy himself and everyone around him during its implementation. Architect László Tóth is a fictional character, according to director Brady Corbet, a kind of synthesis of creators who, with their extraordinary visions in the post-war world, were so far ahead of their time that they fought rather than created. "The Brutalist is essentially a story about the toxicity of the American Dream. On the one hand, Tóth was given a chance to regain his reputation, on the other hand, his patron's smallness undermined it," says director Corbet.
