1860s, San Francisco. Free-spirited Vivienne (Vicky Krieps) falls in love with the taciturn carpenter Holger (Viggo Mortensen). By his side, she sets out through the picturesque landscape of Nevada canyons and forests to find her dream home. He settles in a small, seemingly peaceful town, which is controlled by a corrupt mayor and his associates. When Holger leaves to fight in the civil war, Vivienne is left alone to face the pitfalls of a harsh environment, to which chaos is brought especially by the despotic mayor's son Weston. Viggo Mortensen's second directorial venture is a timeless romance between two fatally wayward lovers.
