The story of an architecture teacher from Copenhagen who surprised the whole world and himself when he won an architectural competition for one of the most famous contemporary symbols of Paris.
The year is 1983. An architectural competition is announced for a new landmark in Paris, which is to become a symbol of its modern district of La Défense. The largest international architectural firms participate in the competition and the unknown architecture teacher Johan Otto von Spreckelsen surprisingly wins with his project The Great Arch – La Grande Arche. Up to this point, this fifty-year-old Dane has built only four buildings: his home and three small chapels, dedicating his life primarily to teaching and finding a balance between space, light and the human soul.
His Grand Arch is simple, geometrically pure, inspired by the idea of a gateway to heaven. The film follows Otto as he deals with the pressure of politicians, officials and the media, and his own doubts about whether it is possible to remain faithful to a spiritual vision in the midst of a world of compromise. The building, which was supposed to be a symbol of harmony, gradually becomes a mirror of his inner struggle. Director Stéphane Demoustier commented on the film that he wanted to tell the story of a silent hero - a man who remains true to his vision even when the world pressures him to adapt. According to him, this is not a film about architecture, but about faith, humility and the courage to create.
