In a flooded city, a young girl carefully cares for a large egg, which she holds in her arms. She believes it is the egg of an angel. A boy with a huge gun emerges from a strange carriage. He is looking for a bird he saw in a dream. In the abandoned city, the two characters seem to form a fragile bond, but one night the boy breaks the girl's egg.
An animated film written, directed and created from the ground up by Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) with an original concept and under the artistic direction of Yoshitaka Amano (known for the Final Fantasy series). Originally released in 1985 as an OVA (Original Video Animation), the film has since gained worldwide recognition as a unique and iconic work. This collaborative work by two of Japan’s most respected creators, created early in their careers, has become a cult classic known for its impressive visual effects and unique, mysterious setting. Today, it is considered a legend and a milestone in the history of animation, and is celebrated as a cinematic and artistic masterpiece in general. To mark the 40th anniversary of its premiere, a fully remastered version in 4K resolution is planned for a worldwide release in 2025. Under the supervision of director Mamoru Oshii himself, the original 35mm negatives were scanned and restored using state-of-the-art technology. A format suitable for screening in Dolby Cinema theaters was also created.
